Editing a File with Web Weaver EZ

Every semester you will need to make some changes to your course syllabus and schedule, updating them to fit the new term. You also may wish occasionally to update other course files. Web Weaver EZ is a simple HTML editing program, available for free download, which you may use to make such changes and updates. (NOTE: You must have Internet Explorer 4.0 or above installed on your computer for this program to work.)

Downloading Web Weaver EZ

To download Web Weaver EZ to your computer, go to the McWeb Software Web Weaver EZ download site. Click on the download and Web Weaver EZ links until you reach the Download Now page. In most cases, clicking on the Download Now link will successfully download (save) the file to your computer. (Notice the file size in kilobytes - K - or megabytes - MB - as you save it.)

NOTE: If downloading stops before the complete file is saved, click instead on the Alternate download site link (on the right side of the Download Now page), which will download the file from an alternate source that should work properly.

Once you have downloaded the file, find it on your computer (if you save the download to your desktop this will be easier) and double-click the "wwez" icon to begin installation. The directions which follow indicate how to use Web Weaver EZ to work with your WebCT course files once it is installed on your computer.

Download the WebCT course file to be edited:

  1. In WebCT's Manage Files, select the file to edit by clicking in the box to the left of the filename. Write down the name of the file and the folder where it is located.
  2. In the Actions frame on the right side of the screen, under Options: Files, click on Download.
  3. On the Download file page, click Download again.
A File Download window may appear. If so, click on Save.
  4. Save the selected file in a location on your PC where you can find it easily (such as on your Desktop). Do not rename this file.
  5. Minimize WebCT.

Use Web Weaver to edit the file:

  1. Open Web Weaver EZ.
  2. To open the file you wish to edit in Web Weaver, click on File/Open in the upper left of the menu bar, or click on the Open icon in the toolbar just below the menu bar.
  3. A dialog box called Open will appear. Click on the "Look in:" box at the top (this is the file-manager window), and browse your computer's file manager until you find the correct file.
  4. Click the file name, then click on the Open button (in the lower right corner of your file-manager window).
  5. Your file will now show on Web Weaver's editing screen. Web Weaver is a WYSIWYG editor ("What You See Is What You Get"), so the changes you make on this page will look the same when you place the updated page back in WebCT.
    • NOTE: Web Weaver will not use the CCCOnline stylesheet, so expect the page to look a little different than it does when you view it in WebCT. This is not a problem as you will only be changing information on this page, not fonts or colors or formatting. The page will revert to the stylesheet look when uploaded after editing.
  6. Read through the page, and make the necessary changes to dates or other information. Please do not make any changes to the font, colors, or formatting of the page. Edit the file as you normally would, adding, deleting and changing text as usual. As you edit, you may use the elements on the formatting toolbar (very similar to those in Word and other word-processing software, and used in much the same way).
  7. After editing, save the file using the File/Save menu feature or by clicking on the Save icon on the toolbar. (Again, do not rename the file.)
  8. Close Web Weaver.

Upload the revised and saved file back into your WebCT course:

  1. Reopen (or maximize) WebCT.
  2. In Manage Files, upload the edited file.
  3. In the Actions frame on the right side of the screen, under Options: Files, click on Upload.
    • The Upload File page will appear. Click on Browse to search your computer's file manager and locate the file.
    • Click the file name, then click on the Open button (in the lower right corner of your file-manager window).
    • Next to the Destination folder box, click the drop-down arrow and select the folder where the file should be uploaded. Make sure you upload the file to the same folder it was originally downloaded from. (Refer to the information you wrote down in Step 1 if needed.)
    • Click Upload.
  4. You should see an Upload File page that asks if you want to overwrite the existing file. Click on Overwrite. (This will replace the original file with your edited version.)
  5. Manage Files reappears.
  6. Click on the magnifying-glass icon next to the filename to view your changes. If you are not satisfied, repeat these procedures and make any additional changes in Web Weaver.
  7. View the edited file through the class's Course Menu to see the changes as they will appear to students, with the stylesheet attached.
