Faculty Handbook
D
Discipline Meetings
A meeting for all faculty teaching in each discipline will be held on an annual basis. This meeting gives everyone a chance to discuss the course shells, teaching and textbook issues, and spend some time talking about distance learning in general. All faculty are expected to attend this meeting each year.
Discussion (Threaded)
“Discussion is uniquely designed to encourage student’s to strengthen their intellectual muscle and practice their strategic learning moves. It can be a very powerful and useful teaching and learning strategy.” (Patricia Cross, ”The Roll of Class Discussion in the Learning-Centered Classroom”, The Cross Papers, No. 6, League for Innovation in the Community College Educational testing Service, Jan 2003).
The CCCOnline quality assurance plan is primarily focused on communication – faculty to student and student to student. Discussion plays a large part in this communication. For complete details please see the QA plan and the Faculty gold document. Essentially, faculty are required to use discussion threads in a minimum of 50% of course units and they are required to participate in those threads on a regular and timely basis.
