Discussion Activities

Unit 1 Plagiarism Discussion Sample:
"It' s important to talk about plagiarism up front, since it relates to all writing in this course. Let's talk about what it is, how to avoid it, and what happens if you choose to plagiarize."

Citation Practice in Discussion:
Using Discussion to have learners demonstrate citation skills. Ask all learners to read a common article (could be a link). Have each post one quote, one cited summary or paraphrase, and one bib entry in the discussion. Both faculty and learners remark on those that are correct, or correct those that aren't.

Confirming and Communicating about Plagiarism Cases

Requiring the Learner to Produce Print Sources:
(See the Letter from the Dean for sample text.)

Different Cases:
A paper or uses sources and doesn't cite them correctly is still subject to consequences related to citation requirements (ex. one citation error= B , 2 = C, 3 = F on research points).

Overt plagiarism is the submission of a paper copied or written from another student, one basically copied from an internet site (or chunks) or bought papers. Overt plagiarism may also occur in discussion postings.

Confirming Cases:
Google: Cut and paste some like sections of the paper into Google.
Others: www.turnitin.com

Communicating:

In all cases, copy your Faculty Chair in student communications. If there is a learning opporunity, use it. If it's overt, discuss it with your chair, then proceed with communicating the consequences.
