The following rubrics define how points will be awarded for your , essays, and other assignments. This page is best viewed in Internet Explorer.


NARRATIVE ESSAYS Rubric:

Essay Content = 50 pts. total
20 points -- The essay demonstrates the assigned essay form (Narration)
15 points -- Clearly Stated Thesis:. Narrative Hook Sets Expectation About Story
15 points -- Details develop the storyline and peak action

Paragraphs = 30 pts. total
10 points -- Each paragraph develops one point
10 points -- Each paragraph is unified and coherent
5 points -- Intro paragraph creates the setting
5 points -- Smooth, quick conclusion after peak action

Mechanical and Sentence Errors = 20 pts. total
More than 7 mechanical errors--no points and paper could be returned w/o a grade.

Total = 100 points.... Your Score =............ /100

A = 90 - 100... B= 80 - 89... C= 70 - 79... D = 60 - 69.... F = 0 - 59


Compare-Contrast Essay Scoring Rubric:

Essay
20 points -- The essay demonstrates the assigned essay form (Compare-Contrast)
15 points -- Clearly Stated thesis: The thesis clearly defines whether the essay is about similarities, differences, or both
15 points -- Details develop significant points about similarities or differences (not the obvious ones)

Paragraphs
10 points --Each paragraph develops one point
10 points --Each paragraph is unified and coherent
5 points--Intro paragraph creates interest
5 points--Conclusion provides a natural end to discussion

Mechanical and Sentence Errors
20 points --2-3 errors
15 points-- 4 errors
10 points-- 5 errors
More than 5 mechanical errors-no points and paper could be returned w/o a grade.

A = 90 - 100 B= 80 - 89 C= 70 - 79 D = 60 - 69 F = 0 - 59


Cause-Effect Essay Scoring Rubric:

          Essay
          20 points--The essay demonstrates the assigned essay form (Cause-Effect)
        15 points--Clearly Stated thesis: The thesis clearly names cause(s) and effects or results related to the paper topic.
        15 points--Details contribute to the reader's understanding of the cause(s) and effects or results.
 
          Paragraphs
          10 points--Each paragraph develops one point
        10 points--Each paragraph is unified and coherent
          5 points--Intro paragraph creates interest
          5 points--Conclusion provides a natural end to discussion

          Mechanical and Sentence Errors
          20 points--2-3 errors
        15 points--4 errors
        10 points--5 errors
        More mechanical errors=-no points and paper could be returned w/o a grade.

Summary-Response Essay Rubric:

          Essay
         20 points--Essay demonstrates the assigned essay form (Summary-Response)
        10 points--Clearly Stated Thesis: The thesis clearly names and defines the writer's position in response to the reading discussed
        10 points--The development unfolds the ENG 121 writer's response to various points in the published essay

         5 points -- The essay includes an evaluation of the original article's objectivity

         5 points -- Balance between the summary and response: 1/3: 2/3

          Paragraphs
          10 points--Each paragraph develops one point
        10 points--Each paragraph is unified and coherent
          5 points--Intro paragraph creates includes the essay title, essay's author and a brief, general summary.
          5 points--Conclusion provides a natural end to discussion

          Mechanical and Sentence Errors
          20 points--2-3 errors
        15 points--4 errors
        10 points--5 errors
        More mechanical errors--no points and paper could be returned w/o a grade.

25 points--Evidence supports the argument; rebuttal is considered
25 points--The essay demonstrates the assigned essay form (Argument)

20 points--Each paragraph develops one point
20 points--Each paragraph is unified and coherent
10 points--Intro paragraph introduces the paper
10 points--Conclusion provides a smooth and natural ending

Mechanical and Sentence Errors
25 points:  0-3 errors
20 points : 4 errors
15 points:  5 errors
10 points:   6 errors
No points for more than 6 errors

Research Form and Ethics:
    20 points--Text citation form
    20 points--Works Cited overall formal
    50 points--Works Cited entries format
