The Trinidad State Junior College’s (TSJC) Occupational Safety and Health Curriculum was developed in 1988 and gained Colorado Commission on Higher Education approval in 1989. This curriculum meets the guidelines developed jointly by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) and the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). These guidelines define academic requirements for safety degrees and other routes of academic preparation for the profession.

The guidelines also reflect the tasks and functions performed by safety practitioners as defined by ASSE. In developing the curriculum guidelines, ASSE/BCSP relied on the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) sponsored studies to determine what subjects were most important for safety practitioners. The ASSE/BCSP also contacted TSJC and several other junior colleges and community colleges that have safety associate degree programs for their input on curriculum requirements.

In 1996 the Occupational Safety and Health program won a Colorado Commission on Higher Education (CCHE) Program of Excellence Award. This makes the TSJC Occupational Safety program one of less than 2% of the higher education degree programs in Colorado to receive this award. Through the award, the Commission granted TSJC $223,500 to develop the Occupational Safety program for distance education delivery.

OSH Curriculum

The Occupational Safety and Health Technology Program (OSH) is designed to provide occupational safety training to both pre-service and in-service safety practitioners. OSH courses may be completed via Internet delivery through the Colorado Community Colleges Online (see below). The flexibility of online courses allows you to continue your education while meeting employment, community and family responsibilities.
